Total agreement about labels! How about "Nomenclaturist" as someone who specialises in naming things, a key aspect of label creation? 😆

Vexillology, where'd you dig that up?!

I noticed years ago that @ @35% of flags have heavenly symbols on them-sun, moon, stars. Shows you what they think of themselves. Most if not all dictators demand religious-like devotion to themselves. I need to brush up on that, it's been eons. Interesting stuff. Thanks

Got it off the US TV show, Big Bang Theory, which features a genius-nerd who knows such things, and decided to make his own video podcast "Fun With Flags - Vexillology". Pretty hilarious.

Richard, I think the research is the most rewarding part of this hobby. Discovery is too. I found stuff today I can't ID, maybe you could offer a guess?

I'm in Palawan, Philippines. Mostly ophiolite here. A closed mercury mine is up the road. I smacked open an old boulder on the side of the two-track near the abandoned mine, saw bugs, brought the chunk home since I got a cheap Chinese scope, and it's pretty good. (A Vision, $100-+ on Amazon I think.,)

The boulder is blue/grey chert and pyrite, I e arsethought ' ho-hum,' but are any micros in the cavities? Lots of color- yellow-tan FeSO H20 I guess, micro cerussite (guess) white halotrichite, pyrite that is yellow or tin-white, maybe arsenopyrite?, black hematite, then a green unknown, then a red unknown. The red Xls bladed like siderite, even clusters of blades to 1mm. I assumed HgS, cinnabar, but none of cinnabar pics on Mindat are bladed like siderite. And acid won't touch it, HCl, so not rhodochrosite. The xls are deep red too, not any light red, let alone pink.

Any ideas?!

Have fun with that.

Mike

Well, that sounds like a GREAT rock to explore. A mercury mine in an ophiolite setting sounds really exotic. Is cobalt possible? so erythrite or similar for the red bladed? That's the best guess I can come up with for now. Thanks for sharing, that's absolutely my kind of rock! :)
