Stromatolite farts? Present day stromatolite does have that distinctive odour I've read. (Oh and I've seen 'horse tooth granite' in the Cevennes, refers to the feldspar crystals. And widening the definition of fossil, 'fossil raindrops' in Orkney Isles. )

Yes, I think some kind of direct emanation from living algae (stromatolites) is a possibility, beyond microbial decomposition. The Belt rocks also have raindrop impressions.

Thanks Richard for 3 things. The first is that your posts are so, so interesting and informative even for a laywoman like me. I never miss a word. The second is.. thank you for reminding us that there are still good, smart, brilliant and basically once again good, good people with hearts and brains in your country. And the third is that my son is just ending his first year of Geology at Milan university and we read your posts together and he just lights up. So thank you. Don't be disheartened. Science wiki prevail. It always does
