I have a friend (bloke?! an Aussie), who put in fence posts and many years later when he pulled some up, they were petrified. (Since he is high end, he didn't 'collect' them.)
Thanks for this informative post. I never thought of the bobby sox trees as being petrified, or partially so. Just saturated or discolored with "hard" water deposit the same way eyeglasses can be if they catch too much geyser spray.
I have an 8 lb piece of petrified wood that is part of an exposed log on our farm at Three Buttes in Richland County Montana. Actually near the top of the middle butte. Fort Union Formation I believe Dug it out in about 1985 or so. Would love to go back. Have photo to share if you would like.
