Armchair exploration has its charms. Down the rabbit hole everytime. Also have some "useless" old maps, useless until I need to find certain information, often a name or small detail, that does not appear on readily available modern mapping.

Absolutely fascinating! My wife is from Kailua, Oahu and knew alot of this, she remarked those geologic processes are still going on. A very dynamic environment. I hadn't heard (nor had she) about that southeastern seamount, now 10,000 feet off the ocean floor. I wonder how long before it forms a new Hawaiian island?

Depends on the highly unpredictable rate of eruption, of course. It's been there about 400,000 years and the very vague estimates for breaking the surface range from 10,000 to 100,000 years.

You made me google the Texas county. Yes, off the interstate. I used to live in south central Illinois, 1 hour + from the interstate. But we made Heath candy bars!.. it's way north of Big Bend. A stunning place. Great geology there, from what I saw.

This is one of your finer rabbit holes. Outside your normal region. Love them all! My collection of Nat Geo maps (3 dozen?) went to a grandson. He is already on the road with them.
